Phillips 66 is navigating an uncertain energy market as West Texas Intermediate crude oil prices hover near $100 per barrel, according to Oilprice.com. Conflicts in the Middle East have contributed to uncertainty across the broader energy business.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration projects the average spot price for West Texas Intermediate at $84.65 per barrel in 2026, up from $65.40 in 2025. That outlook presents a potential challenge for Phillips 66 because refining generates a significant portion of its margin.

Higher crude prices can pressure the company through increased input costs. Even so, the refining environment remains highly profitable because fuel demand has stayed strong while global fuel inventories have remained relatively tight.

That combination gives Phillips 66 an important source of resilience. Strong demand for refined fuels and constrained inventories can support healthy refining margins even as the cost of crude oil remains elevated.

Phillips 66 also stands apart from many refining peers because its operations extend beyond refining. The company has diversified across midstream and chemicals, creating a broader business structure than a refiner focused primarily on processing crude oil.

Alongside its investments in refining operations, Phillips 66 is allocating a significant amount of capital to midstream. Those assets can generate stable cash flows when shippers use them under long term arrangements.

Midstream operations are less vulnerable to commodity price volatility than refining activities. As a result, the diversified model insulates Phillips 66 from fluctuations in commodity prices to a significant extent while preserving its exposure to profitable refining conditions.

Other established refiners are also positioned to benefit from the favorable refining environment. HF Sinclair and Par Pacific Holdings have both reported conditions that support attractive margins from converting crude oil into products such as gasoline and diesel.

During its second quarter 2026 call, HF Sinclair said wars in the Middle East and Ukraine had disrupted refining capacity. The company also reported that fuel inventories were low in the United States and across its key operating regions while demand for finished products remained healthy.

Those conditions created opportunities for HF Sinclair to generate healthy refining margins. Limited fuel inventories can strengthen the operating environment for refiners when demand for gasoline, diesel and other products remains robust.

Par Pacific continued benefiting from a strong refining market at the beginning of the third quarter. Its refining index reached $31.34 per barrel in July, only slightly below the second quarter average of approximately $33 per barrel.

The index provides a rough indication of the profitability associated with converting crude oil into refined products. Par Pacific’s July reading showed that refining conditions remained highly favorable even after easing slightly from the previous quarter’s average.

Fuel demand remained strong, particularly on the mainland, while global fuel inventories stayed relatively tight. That balance of healthy consumption and limited excess supply helped Par Pacific continue earning attractive margins from its refineries.

Phillips 66 shares have gained 101.5% over the past year. That performance trails the 118.8% increase recorded by the composite group of stocks belonging to the industry during the same period.

The company also carries a valuation above the broader industry average. Phillips 66 trades at a trailing enterprise value to EBITDA multiple of 11.75X, compared with the industry average of 5.94X.

At the same time, the Zacks Consensus Estimate for Phillips 66’s 2026 earnings has increased over the past seven days. Phillips 66 currently holds a Zacks Rank #1, designated Strong Buy, reflecting a favorable earnings estimate trend alongside its refining and midstream positioning.
