Siemens Energy has secured the turbine supply contract for the 2.6 gigawatt Taweelah C Independent Power Producer project in Abu Dhabi.
The award brings the company’s advanced H-Class gas turbine technology to the United Arab Emirates for the first time.
The contract also represents the third consecutive power station at the Taweelah site to use Siemens Energy equipment.
That record deepens the manufacturer’s already substantial role within Abu Dhabi’s utility scale generation fleet.
Taweelah C will be developed as a combined cycle power plant with a planned total output of 2.6 gigawatts.
Its size places the project among the most consequential additions to generation capacity currently planned in the Gulf region.
Siemens Energy’s package includes three SGT5 9000HL gas turbines and two SST5 5000 steam turbines.
The company will also provide five generators, comprising SGen5 3000W and SGen5 2000P models, along with the necessary auxiliary systems.
The three gas turbines will become the first H-Class units installed in the UAE.
They represent Siemens Energy’s most efficient class of large frame gas turbines and are engineered for high output, operating flexibility, and demanding combined cycle service.
Production will span several major Siemens Energy manufacturing centers.
The gas and steam turbines will be built in Berlin and Muelheim, Germany, while the generators will come from the company’s facility in Charlotte, United States.
Abu Dhabi National Energy Company, known as TAQA, is developing the plant with an international consortium. The consortium includes Saudi Arabia’s Al Jomaih Energy and Water Company and Singapore based Sembcorp Industries.
China Energy Engineering Group Corporation will serve as the engineering, procurement, and construction contractor.
Emirates Water and Electricity Company will purchase the plant’s electricity as the sole offtaker, giving the project a clearly defined route into Abu Dhabi’s power system.
Grid flexibility is central to the plant’s technical mission. Taweelah C is intended to provide dispatchable capacity that can respond as Abu Dhabi adds more variable renewable generation and faces rising electricity requirements.
The plant has also been designed to accommodate future carbon capture and storage installations.
That provision aligns the project with the UAE objective of achieving climate neutrality by 2050 while preserving options for managing emissions from gas fired generation.
Karim Amin, a member of Siemens Energy’s Executive Board, described reliable and flexible dispatchable generation as increasingly important as electricity demand rises.
He also highlighted the significance of introducing the company’s H-Class technology to the UAE with leading performance capabilities.
For turbomachinery operators, the arrival of the SGT5 9000HL carries implications extending far beyond initial commissioning.
A new regional installed base creates future demand for technical expertise, inspections, spare parts, outage planning, digital monitoring, and specialized maintenance support.
The configuration also gives operations teams a substantial equipment train to manage.
Three large gas turbines, two steam turbines, five generators, and associated auxiliary systems will require carefully coordinated maintenance strategies across the plant’s operating life.
Its combined cycle arrangement will capture exhaust energy from the gas turbines to produce steam for the steam turbine section.
This process raises plant efficiency and extracts considerably more electrical output from the fuel than a simple cycle configuration could deliver.
Taweelah C also illustrates the global industrial network required to execute a modern Gulf power project.
Development, construction, manufacturing, financing, and equipment responsibilities extend across the UAE, Germany, the United States, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, and China.
That complexity will demand precise logistics and disciplined coordination between the original equipment manufacturer, contractor, developers, and plant owner.
Turbine delivery schedules, generator integration, auxiliary packages, and commissioning activities must converge without disrupting the broader construction program.
