Hanwha Power has completed commissioning of its first fuel gas compressor installation in the United States, placing three units into service at the 950 MW Trumbull Energy Center in Ohio.
The milestone gives the Korean supplier a significant reference project as it formally enters the American power generation market.
The combined cycle gas turbine plant began operations following an opening ceremony on June 24, according to Hanwha.
The event brought together Korea Southern Power, also known as KOSPO, Gemma Power Systems, Siemens Energy, Ohio officials, the Korean Consul General, lenders, and other project participants.
The facility was developed to help close a generation gap created by the retirement of aging coal fired power assets.
It is expected to supply the PJM Interconnection, the largest wholesale electricity market in the United States and a region facing significant changes in its thermal generation fleet.
For turbomachinery operators, the project highlights the growing importance of reliable fuel gas compression at modern combined cycle plants.
These facilities are increasingly expected to deliver dispatchable capacity while responding to variable demand, shifting pipeline conditions, and fluctuating generation from other resources.
Hanwha supplied three fuel gas compressors equipped with variable frequency drive technology.
The control architecture allows compressor operation to adjust automatically as pipeline pressure moves through the extreme seasonal ranges commonly encountered across the PJM region.
That flexibility is essential because fuel gas delivery pressure must remain inside the operating envelope established for the gas turbine fuel system.
A failure to maintain suitable pressure can expose the plant to control excursions, excessive thermal loading, unstable operation, and potential limits on turbine output.
When pipeline pressure drops, the compressors must provide sufficient pressure boost without introducing disruptive operating behavior.
When pressure rises, the equipment must reduce compression demand efficiently while continuing to deliver a stable and dependable fuel supply.
Variable frequency drives allow compressor speed to follow actual pressure requirements more closely than conventional fixed speed arrangements.
That approach can support smoother plant operation while avoiding unnecessary power consumption when the pipeline already provides a greater share of the required gas pressure.
The compressors are especially relevant when the plant must respond quickly to dispatch instructions from the regional grid operator.
Rapid changes in turbine load can alter fuel demand sharply, placing additional pressure on compressor controls, supporting systems, and the broader balance of plant configuration.
Hanwha also secured a nine year long term service agreement that covers capital spare parts and maintenance through three major overhaul cycles.
The contract extends the company’s role well beyond equipment delivery and initial commissioning, linking its service performance directly to the generating station’s future availability.
The company’s Houston service center will serve as the main hub for support at the plant and for component refurbishment.
This domestic service presence is intended to give the Trumbull Energy Center faster access to technical resources, replacement components, repairs, and planned overhaul capabilities.
For plant owners and engineering contractors, that service structure reflects a wider change in the turbomachinery market.
Equipment suppliers are increasingly expected to support critical machinery across its entire operating life rather than ending their involvement after installation and acceptance testing.

The compressor installation also supports the plant’s role in delivering stable electricity to the PJM grid as older coal capacity continues to retire.
Trumbull gives Hanwha a prominent operating reference in a demanding market where pipeline variability, seasonal demand, and rapid dispatch can test fuel systems.
It also gives operators another compressor and service model to evaluate as efficient combined cycle plants assume a larger role in maintaining grid reliability.
