GE Vernova has secured a major equipment order for Vietnam Electricity’s Quang Trach II LNG Power Plant, placing its 9HA technology at the center of one of Vietnam’s most closely watched generation projects.
The plant is expected to provide more than 1.6 GW when commercial service begins by 2030.
The order, booked in the second quarter of 2026, covers two 9HA.02 gas turbines and two H78 generators.
Together, the machines will form the principal rotating equipment package for the combined cycle facility in the Hon La Economic Zone of Quang Tri Province.
EVN is developing the project with an engineering, procurement, and construction consortium formed by Power Construction Corporation of China and LILAMA Corporation.
Their execution challenge will be to integrate a large power island with fuel, steam, electrical, and grid systems on a demanding schedule.
Imported liquefied natural gas will supply the plant after being converted back into gaseous form for combustion.
Exhaust energy from the two turbines will then be recovered to produce steam and additional electricity, giving the combined cycle arrangement a clear efficiency advantage over simple cycle generation.
At the heart of the installation will be GE Vernova’s H class gas turbine platform.
The two 9HA.02 units are designed to provide the output, efficiency, and operating flexibility required by a power system facing rapid demand growth and rising renewable generation.
For turbine operators, engineering contractors, and service companies, the award is another strong signal of Southeast Asia’s appetite for large frame gas turbines.
These machines are increasingly expected to deliver efficient generation while responding quickly to changing grid conditions.
EVN expects Quang Trach II to strengthen electricity reliability as Vietnam’s industrial and residential demand continues to climb.
Flexible gas generation can also support the grid when variable wind and solar resources decline or fluctuate unexpectedly.
That duty creates significant technical demands for rotating equipment.
Gas turbines serving modern grids must manage more starts, faster load changes, wider operating ranges, and changing maintenance requirements without sacrificing availability or component life.
The project is also linked to wider grid modernization efforts. EVN’s Power Project Management Board No. 2 said GE Vernova’s participation builds on a long standing relationship and a March 2026 memorandum of understanding covering potential High Voltage Direct Current technology opportunities.
That collaboration is intended to improve grid reliability and enable Vietnam to accommodate a greater share of renewable energy.
High capacity transmission and flexible thermal generation can work together to move electricity efficiently while stabilizing a system exposed to increasingly variable power flows.
GE Vernova’s selection also arrives as the company highlights growing operating experience across its HA fleet.
The manufacturer said the platform has exceeded 4 million commercial operating hours, with nearly 130 units operating in 21 countries.
That accumulated experience matters to owners assessing combustion performance, maintenance intervals, parts availability, and long range service risk.
A large operating fleet can also provide valuable field data for improving outage planning, controls, inspections, and component repair strategies.
Ramesh Singaram, GE Vernova’s President and CEO for Gas Power in Asia Pacific, said the award reflects confidence in HA technology “to deliver efficient, flexible, and reliable power.”
He said projects such as Quang Trach II can help Vietnam satisfy rising demand, reinforce grid stability, and develop a more diversified energy mix.
GE Vernova has operated in Vietnam since 1993 and has worked with EVN since the utility was established in 1995.
Its installed gas power base in the country totals about 2.2 GW, supported by nearly 1,100 employees across nine locations.
That local presence includes the Phu My repair facility and the Dung Quat heat recovery steam generator manufacturing plant.
Access to domestic repair and manufacturing capabilities could reduce outage exposure, simplify spare parts logistics, and improve lifecycle cost control as the plant approaches commercial operation.
Quang Trach II is likely to become an important benchmark for large scale LNG power development in Vietnam.
Its performance will be watched closely as utilities balance electricity growth, fuel security, renewable integration, reliability, and pressure to reduce emissions across the power sector.
